Awards Students Offering Support a special citation for Social Entrepreneurship

(Toronto, 7 July 2011) Entrepreneurs are poised to drive the next major wave of economic growth, but the wider community must do more to support these creative-minded innovators, Ernst & Young said yesterday when revealing this year’s finalists for Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year®.

Greg Overholt, on behalf of Students Offering Support, was selected as the recipient of the special citation for Social Entrepreneurship in Ontario. This citation is a unique category among the awards and is given to one entrepreneur whose achievements have driven large scale social change and improved people’s quality of life.

Students Offering Support takes pride in having the opportunity to become part of the entrepreneurship community across Canada, particularly within Ontario, and is congratulating the winners and finalists of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneurship of the Year Awards for their remarkable success.

“Businesses — and countries — don’t grow by standing still,” explains Colleen McMorrow, National and Ontario Director of Entrepreneur Of The Year. “Entrepreneurial thinking empowers companies to generate new jobs, open new doors and seize new opportunities. But stakeholders — from governments to businesses to academia — must now work together to create a truly entrepreneurial ecosystem where creative-minded businesses can thrive.”

The Entrepreneur Of The Year Awards celebrate the contribution and spirit of entrepreneurs everywhere. The Canadian program is in its 18th year of honouring the country’s most impressive entrepreneurs from all areas of business. Award winners are chosen based on their vision, leadership, financial success and social responsibility.

The Ontario winners will be announced at a banquet on November 2, and the overall winner will represent the region at the national banquet held in Toronto on November 23.

Greg Overholt and Students Offering Support has been a finalist for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for three consecutive years. 2010 nomination information and vignette video can be found here.

About Students Offering Support
SOS: Students Offering Support is a charitable sustainable social venture that develops and supports SOS chapters residing within post-secondary schools across North America. Each University SOS chapter raises money to raise roofs through raising marks during our ‘Exam-AID’ group review sessions, taught and coordinated by student volunteers for university and high school students. Each year, the money raised is spent creating sustainable education projects in developing nations on annual outreach trips. Since 2005, over 2,000 SOS volunteers have tutored over 20,000 students and raised more than $650,000 for various rural communities across Latin America.
